Summer Solstice Newsletter 2020

Welcome To Our Summer Staff
Urban Roots London is happy to welcome the Summer 2020 Farm Crew!

Crew members Kelsey Lamont and Olivier Hebert are working hard to help produce high-quality, organically-grown vegetables and herbs
for the London community.

In July, we welcome Sam Smith-Lauchlin and Solange Morin to the Urban Roots team. Our crew’s efforts on the farm are essential to the continued success of Urban Roots as a whole. Welcome!

Farm Shares
Urban Roots Farm Shares allow our friends and customers to invest in Urban Roots’ mission and vision. You can now purchase a loadable “Urban Roots Farm Share” in an amount of your choosing, redeemable at any of our Farm Gate Markets. Farm Shares are reloadable at any time, in person or by e-transfer, and can be applied toward any wholesale priced produce,
merchandise purchase or donation.

Every purchase of a farm share is an investment in our organization’s operations and infrastructure. Think of it like a loadable gift card for fresh, organically grown produce from right here in London!
Farm Shares can be loaded for any amount, have no cash value and do not expire. However, for those who spend a certain amount we offer some small tokens of gratitude!

Supporters who purchase Farm Shares for $100 or more will also receive a sustainable produce bag! Those who spend $200 or more will receive the produce bag as well as an Urban Roots tote bag (beautifully printed by our friends at Rezonance) and for Farm Shares of $300 or more upfront, you will receive both bags as well as one of our Urban Roots t-shirts!

Community Composting

Now Accepting Contributions for the 2020 Season

Why wait until Fall 2021 to start composting? Urban Roots London, in partnership with the City of London and MLHU, is now accepting organic waste from our neighbours in the London community. Thank you to London Environmental Network for inviting us into the Enviro Action Incubator which supports the development and
launch of the composting program.

The Urban Roots Community Composting program helps lower the amount of food waste ending up in landfills and puts nutrients back into the ground that grows our food. This full cycle holistic approach to waste reduction is a sustainable way to reduce your environmental impact. It also increases our crop yield, which allows us to feed more members of our community.

Wondering how to get involved?
Save your food scraps, grounds and leaf litter. Bring them to us during one of our farm gate sales on Wednesdays from 4–8 p.m. at 21 Norlan Ave. near Hamilton Rd. and Highbury Ave.

Can’t make it? Let us know and we can arrange a time that works for you between Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Download a printable factsheet on Urban Roots Community Composting program here.

Once you bring your scraps to us, we will weigh, record, and then process them into “black gold” compost that will be used on the farm to boost yields and feed the community. You can then pick up fresh, local produce at the farm gate sales, save your scraps and start again!

Farm Updates
Although COVID-19 has changed the way we operate, Urban Roots has continued to find safe ways to upgrade and work on our farm. We want to thank Reimagine Co. for donating sanitizers and cleaning supplies to keep our staff, volunteers, customers and community partners safe and healthy.
We are always looking for new ways to promote a healthy, sustainable community. We are excited to announce that, with help from London Cycle Link and Squeaky Wheel Bike Co-op, bicycle parking is now available at the farm! Come visit us while encouraging a safe and healthy cycle-friendly city.

Along with bicycle parking, Urban Roots London has expanded. We now have more land to grow crops and have upgraded our general maintenance practices to provide a better on-farm experience for our visitors. Come check out our new and improved farm!
Get Involved!
Volunteers are the lifeblood of our farm and community. The generous time commitment our volunteers make allows us to run our farm smoothly and build a strong community. Help prepare a vegetable bed, plant a row of beets, or pull what sometimes feels like an endless supply of thistle. Volunteering with Urban Roots London is a fun way to explore a gardening passion or involve yourself in the London community. Get involved today!
In order to follow proper health and safety protocols we will be scheduling volunteer times with individuals interested. Unless there is heavy rainfall or a thunderstorm warning, assume that we will have a volunteer leader on the farm with a list of tasks that need to be done for your scheduled volunteer time.
To volunteer, email us at Alternatively, we have drop-in volunteer times and farm tours available 4–8 p.m. on Wednesdays. We suggest you bring your own gardening tools, water and clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty.
Support Urban Roots

Each year, as our vision grows alongside our little seedlings, we’re humbled by the outpouring of support we get from our community.

We are so thankful for the continued support that we receive from the Urban Roots London community. Your donations help to provide necessary tools and supplies that will help optimize our volunteer’s time.
