April 25, 2018 – Earth Day Spring Prep
This past weekend saw a wave of activity in communities across the City of London, the province, and the world in celebration of Earth Day 2018. As individuals and families set out to enjoy and preserve the natural environment, Urban Roots London held a community volunteer Earth Day Spring Prep Celebration with endless coffee from Fire Roasted Coffee and seemingly unlimited fresh baked cookies from La Noisette Bakery, Urban Roots Board of Directors and dozens of volunteers were fueled for a full day of labour in the beautiful spring sunshine.
With exclusively volunteer support, Urban Roots was able to till its entire growing space, prepare dozens of planting beds, clear rocks and debris from the fields, outfit its hoop house with rust preventative wrappings, and work to recap an onsite well for watering. All in a day’s work. What a day – what an Earth Day!
Urban Roots looks forward to continuing its work to revitalize underused land within the City of London for agriculture, by producing high quality, organic vegetables and herbs for local distribution and donation. Urban Roots thanks all of its many volunteers and supporters, including the City of London’s Active & Green Communities Program as well as its season sponsor, Lerners LLP for their generous and ongoing support of this event and others.
Urban Roots invites its neighbours and all Londoners to join it at a free volunteer appreciation and community engagement barbecue hosted at the farm at 21 Norlan Avenue, London, Ontario, in partnership with Growing Chefs Ontario on May 12, 2018.

It has been a cold winter, but don’t let that fool you into thinking that we haven’t been busy! We are working hard developing partnerships with a variety of organizations across the city, solidifying our model, and preparing for the upcoming planting season.
Recently we were featured in the “Outside the Gates” edition of Western News. You can see Adela Talbot’s piece here: https://news.westernu.ca/2018/03/bringing-urban-farming-community/
In January, Libro Credit Union generously provided us a six-month membership at Innovation Works as part of their incubator sponsorship program. https://www.innovationworkslondon.ca/blog/motor-city-inspires-forest-city
We have also been members of the London Environmental Network since late last season, and would encourage you to follow what they are doing here in the city! http://www.londonenvironment.net/

What a whirlwind of a first season! We’ve had so many opportunities to share about our project and we’re grateful for the interest that Londoners have shown.
The CBC featured Graham in a morning drive program – the full video of which can be found here (Graham shows up at minute 44:30). The CBC also published a corresponding article: Urban Farmers Hope You’ll Help Dig Up London’s Food Deserts.
Our friends at Trojan Technologies wrote a piece called Trojan Supports Urban Organic Farming in the City of London – they’ve been a generous supporter of our first season and we wouldn’t have accomplished all we did without their help!

Exciting things are happening with Urban Roots London!
Yesterday, the London Free Press featured our project in a wonderful article: Urban Farm Breaking New Ground
TVO wrote a piece that referenced our project: London Fights Urban Agriculture’s Peskiest Pest: Red Tape.
And in our earlier days, the Western Gazette featured us: Urban Agriculture Comes to London.
